When a manager cannot motivate a £65m signing who won the Champions League last season then he is failing.
When a manager cannot decide on a standard formation six months into a job - let alone a starting 11 - then he is failing.
If I were Manchester United's board I'd have given him his final warning a long time ago: This squad cost serious money and has serious talent, and if he can't get it together so it at least looks like football then I say again that he is failing.
There are clubs where leaving a £37m playmaker and a £220K a week striker on the bench when you're a goal down in a quarter-final would be a sackable offence, and deservedly so.
Quite simply Van Gaal has been garbage and I cannot for the life of me understand why more Utd fans aren't calling him on it. £150m spent and half of it is either on the bench or out of position.
That isn't management, that's pissing about with players' careers. I think a club of your stature and a board who have supported the manager financially deserve much more than what he's given so far.
And when Utd are leapfrogged by Liverpool or Spurs - which I think will happen - and you're out of the Champions League for a second season,
I think the "give him time" attitude afforded to him by both the board and supporters will seem like folly. Which it is: Van Gaal has been garbage.
But when not a single player bar De Gea is performing anywhere near their potential then the manager is to blame. There's serious attacking talent there, and Van Gaal has done nothing: In fact, most of those players have gone backwards under him.
That's a serious thing: It's basically the opposite of what a manager is supposed to be doing.
He's useless, and arrogant about it. Sacking a manager part-way through a season has pretty much worked in Chelsea's favour every time it has happened.
And make no mistake: If your club had Chelsea's owner and board they would have disposed of Van Gaal after the away performance to Cambridge within a few minutes of the final whistle.
I think Utd fans need to be a bit more honest with themselves. If he doesn't get top four then he hasn't just not achieved anything, he's actually damaged the club.
Di Maria and Falcao's confidence is shot and they're costing the club how much? Your best midfielder (Hererra) wasn't even in the squad for how long? Mata hasn't started since mid-January and cost £37m?
You can't keep a manager who is not managing in every conceivable sense just because, you know, he was alright a few years back with the biggest teams in the world when the new money clubs didn't exist.
