The female national teams have not been left out, with the Falconets going all the way to the final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014, wowing fans and neutrals alike with a very entertaining brand of attacking football.
An exceptional highlight, being the emergence of a certain Asisat Oshoala, who went on to sign for Liverpool in England.
She carried that swashbuckling form into the senior Women’s African Nations Cup in 2014, culminating in a record 9th title. She was also awarded the golden ball as the best player in the tournament.
Team Nigeria also wowed spectators worldwide during the Paralympics in 2012, especially in Power lifting. We ended the spectacle with 13 medals.
The 2014 commonwealth games was another success story, with Nigeria winning a record 11 gold medals. This culminated in the country winning 36 medals in total, another country. Nigeria finished 8th overall to complete a massively impressive outing.
Individually, Nigerian sportsmen and women have excelled in their various fields, with Blessing Okabare, Vincent Enyeama and Asisat Oshoala arguably the biggest contributors.
Since 2011, Blessing Okagbare has won Gold medals in the 100m, 4 x 100m relay and the Long jump as well. She has won 6 gold medals, 4 silver medals and a bronze medal in various championships, including the Commonwealth games, All-Africa games and the likes.
The aforementioned Oshoala has been an absolute revelation. She rose to limelight in the FIFA u-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014, finishing the tournament as the highest goal scorer as well as being awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament. A really impressive feat that.
Footballers, Mikel Obi and Vincent Enyeama have also been stalwarts over the last 4 years. Both have been nominated for the African footballer of the year award in 2014 and 2015, although both lost to the Mecurial Yaya Toure.
With the criticisms that have continued to befall the Jonathan administration, he can at least lay claim to have presided over the administration with the most sporting excellence.
