Balotelli picked the perfect time to score his first Premier League goal for Liverpool as he stole the headlines from the battle between England strikers present and, potentially, future.
All the talk pre-match was about Daniel Sturridge and his free-scoring Tottenham counterpart Harry Kane. But the Italian proved to be the difference at Anfield, converting fellow substitute Adam Lallana's cross from close range seven minutes from time.
The aforementioned Sturridge and Kane had plenty of impact on the clash, with Spurs striker Kane scoring his 23rd of the season, equalising Lazar Markovic's opener.
The closest Sturridge came was a clever backheel against the post. Sturridge did win the penalty from which Steven Gerrard scored his 10th of the campaign but that was soon cancelled out by Mousa Dembele's close-range effort.
It was Balotelli who stole the headlines however, lifting his side to within two points of third-placed Southampton, who have a match in hand, and also fourth-placed Arsenal.
The Gunners moved back into the top four but were made to work hard against bottom club Leicester in their 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.
Beaten by Spurs in the north London derby on Saturday, Arsenal looked to be in control after first-half goals from Laurent Koscielny and Theo Walcott.
However, Croatia forward Andrej Kramaric netted his first Leicester goal after 61 minutes to reduce the deficit, while Arsene Wenger's side survived some late pressure to secure victory.
Caretaker boss Chris Ramsey presided over QPR's first Premier League away win of the season as chairman Tony Fernandes closed in on his new manager.
Hours before kick-off Fernandes revealed his hope that he had got his man, sending Michael Laudrup's odds tumbling, and spirits within the camp soared, with first-half goals from Leroy Fer and Bobby Zamora setting the club on their way to three points on the road after 11 successive defeats.
Lastly, Dame N'Doye scored one and set up another on his full debut as Hull climbed out of the relegation zone at the expense of a brow-beaten Aston Villa.
