The tournament is all done and dusted, Germany are champions and it’s only logical to say Cameroun came last.
Well now I would like us to look at the top five break out stars of the world cup, that is player that were probably supposed to be squad members or just youngsters tipped to be big in the future but went on to make an impact .
Here we go!
5. DeAndre Yedlin
First up is USA very own 21 year old defender. This is one player that is tipped for really big things. He signed his first professional contract in 2013 for MLS club Seattle Sounders FC becoming the clubs first homegrown player. Then he made it into the MLS team of the week becoming the first rookie to do so.
By July 15 he had made the MLS all-star team for the match against Roma. At the World Cup he made his debut against Portugal and help to set up Dempsey for the goal that gave the Americans the lead.
A second substitute appearance against Germany and another against Belguim were enough to convince football analyst of his unique abilities.
4. Divork Origi
It’s a theory among football lovers that the only reason he made it to Brazil was due to the injury of striker Benteke. The young lad chosen to fill such a big loop hole is just 19 years old.
Standing at 6ft 1 in Divork had previously played for Belgium at all levels and without a senior appearance made the world cup squad. In a Belgium setup where there is intense competition for places, Origi still managed to play all their games scoring once against Russia and starting in their round of sixteen match against USA.
Already tipped for a summer transfer with clubs such as Real Madrid, Liverpool and Spurs all wanting to snap him up. Aggressive, fast, skillful and a lethal right foot. Watch out for this one.
3. Memphis Depay
Next up is PSV attacker and Dutch international Depay. The 19 year old is another one who had previously played at all levels for Netherland. Made an impression during the Champions League group stage matches as well as the Europa league.
He was then selected in the 23 man squad for the tournament in Brazil, coming on as a substitute in 48th minute against Australia and 20 minutes he scored the winning goal making him the youngest Dutchman to score at the world cup at the age of 20 years and 4 months.
He then made another substitute appearance against Chile where he scored the second goal of the game. He was later among the three player nominated for best young player at the tournament.
2. Marcos Rojo
24 year old sporting cp and Argentine left back Rojo is a player with a lot of attacking intent and defensive solidity. Rojo got his first cap in 2011 in a game against Portugal.
The young Argentine managed to play every game except against Belguim when he was suspended. He also scored the winning goal when Argentina and Nigeria locked horns. Also he is the only Argentine to make the all-star XI
1. James Rodriguez
Last but not the least is the tournament’s Golden Boot winner James. The 23 year old Colombian international is an attacking midfielder that also plays for club side Monaco.
Back in Porto, he won the best player in the Primera Liga becoming the youngest player to do so, there by demanding an enormous transfer fee.
Last season in France he made a place in the Ligue1 XI as well as becoming leading the assist table in ligue 1.
With 6 goals at the World Cup and scoring arguably the best goal of the tournament, legend Diego Maradona showed his admiration for the Colombian saying he should have won the golden ball over Lionel Messi.
Having fetched himself 3 man of the match awards as well as making the Fifa world XI, we surely have not seen the last of him.
Well that is my top five breakout stars, who do you think should have made the list or should have been number one. Comment to let us know
