Round of 16 first day matches Brazil and Chile's penalty shootout drama set the tone for the first game of the Round of 16 and James Rodriguez hit the headline again for Colombia with a brace which included a stunning strike in Colombia's 2-0 win over Uruguay.
Today's results sets-up a mouthwatering quarter-final clash between Brazil and Colombia in Fortaleza on Friday, 4 July.
Brazil 1 - 1 Chile (aet) (Brazil win 3-2 on penalties)
Brazil needed a penalty shoot-out to book their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup after a 1-1 draw with Chile in Belo Horizonte.
David Luiz claimed Brazil's opener in the last-16 encounter after 18 minutes, but replays suggested that the final touch may have come from Gonzalo Jara after Thiago Silva flicked an inviting corner from Neymar towards the back post.
Chile found themselves level shortly after the half-hour mark as Alexis Sanchez capitalised on a lack of communication in the Brazil defence, firing beyond Julio Cesar and into the bottom corner.
Hulk had the ball in the back of the net and thought he had put Brazil ahead again shortly after the break, but those celebrations were short lived as the linesman's flag was raised for handball as the striker brought it under control.
Both Chile and Brazil came close to taking the lead afterwards as the game headed into extra-time. The extra-time could not provide goals from either side, the game headed to spot-kicks.
The shootout was tied at 2-2 after four penalties each, but Neymar dispatched his effort before Jara hit the post to send Brazil through to a clash with Colombia or Uruguay in Fortaleza on Friday.
Colombia 2 - 0 Uruguay James Rodriguez was the star of the show as Colombia beat Uruguay 2-0 to set up a World Cup quarter-final with Brazil.
Rodriguez scored with a stunning 22-yard volley after 28 minutes of the round-of-16 clash at the Maracana Stadium, and then swept home a second from close range after five minutes of the second half to top the Golden Boot contenders with five goals.
Uruguay fought hard in an attempt to find a route back into the game after the break but Colombia - and particularly their goalkeeper David Ospina - held firm to book another all South America encounter with hosts Brazil.
