The love for sports especially football in Nigeria cannot be over emphasized. This is why sports journalism is becoming a very popular profession in the country today. I caught up with one of the top sports journalists we have around in person of Mr Sayo Owolabi a presenter and writer. The only "sportspreneur" presently In Nigeria
He is also an award nominee for the best sports presenter of the year and a married man. Find out how it all started for him, how we can improve our local league, his favourite Nigerian footballer and why he spends so much time with his wife in this interview
Let's get to meet you sir
I am SAYO "Sportastic" OWOLABI cspa- 4th Child of a family of 7, Lawyer by education but a SportsPreneur by Choice. You probably have heard or seen me talk Sports on Radio or TV.When did this journey start for you and what is your major challenge as a sports presenter
As a Sports Presenter I never really had challenges except maybe the usual work place bureaucracy and I am not one to handle that with Kid's gloves. I fought it to a stand still.
You no longer work at Inspiration FM, what has been happening since you left? any project you are working on?
How do you deal with criticism as a sports person?
What are the drastic steps that are needed to be taken to improve the NPL especially issues on violence and match fixing.
How will you rate government support for sports and the level of professionalism amongst sports writers
But then you won't blame the Private Companies who are out to make Profit, they can't just afford to see their funds go down the drain.
Government then needs to put the right people in charge of Sports Administration, then the companies will be willing to support Sports.
As regards Professionalism of Sports Writers... Hmmmm I don't need to hang the dirty linens in Public but it's time they step up their game.
I can recall you saying that the Super Eagles were not good enough to win the Nations Cup back in May, do you think they can pose a threat in Brazil 2014?
at the dress rehearsal - The Confederations Cup, Coach Stephen Keshi needs to instill more belief and technical depth.
Good thing however we are seeing some of our key players return to relatively Big European clubs so they will learn from all that too.
Who are you tipping to win this year's African footballer of the year award?
Who is your all time greatest player both local and foreign
Which local young star should we watch out for in the nearest future?
Can you share some of the rough paths you've travelled in life?
What has been your biggest discouragement?
Is your wife also in the sports industry?
I simply work out my schedule to accommodate them all. It was more difficult while I was in paid employment but since I was set FREE, I have given a large chunk of time to my Wife (who needs me most in our soon to be 1 year old marriage... lol). However when it is time for business she understands and simply Pray for me.
What does the future hold for the profession in Nigeria
That is the Next level and it is such a pity that My Generation isn't tuning their minds to this, rather they want to feast on already existent platforms.
It's time We give Fans something New... and trust me Brand will not be far off.
What is there to expect from the Sayo brand in the nearest future?
Any parting words…?
GOD Bless you all. To anyone who wants to follow My path, Truth is don't, rather create your own Path and lay it before GOD and He sure will Bless it.
